WYS ≠ WYG http://opendesignnow.org/index.php/visual_index/wysinwyg/ http://opendesignnow.org/index.php/visual_index/wysinwyg/#comments Thu, 26 May 2011 11:41:30 +0000 remko http://opendesignnow.org/?p=351 Continue reading ]]> Automated production processes have become so refined that it has become virtually impossible for enthusiasts to re-engineer microscopic parts of machines. That sets limits on to how open an open design can be, for instance if it comes to open hardware projects: what parts does one still buy because they are too tiny to produce and which ones can you truly produce openly? Will new fabbing machinery win the industrial race? What about growing hardware when biotechnology and electronics merge and become the premium hardware supplier?

Standards http://opendesignnow.org/index.php/visual_index/standards/ http://opendesignnow.org/index.php/visual_index/standards/#comments Thu, 26 May 2011 11:40:06 +0000 remko http://opendesignnow.org/?p=347 Continue reading ]]> Standards enable translingual communication. They enable Lego to be a profitable enterprise. They have been nice for kids, but also for designers and hackers. Standardization wars consume a lot of energy for the sake of open market competition, leaving consumers with a new harvest of hardware plugs every season. What is a good balance between minimal standardization and maximum bandwidth for diversity and creativity? What comprises the architecture of digital co- creation, and distributed open fabrication, to share and sustain open design?

SocialDesignSite.com bears the slogan ‘We cannot not change the world’. Doesn’t that say enough? Design is a collective and collaborative responsibility, which has a solution-seeking aesthetic that goes beyond beauty. If it regards every situation to be possibly designed, openness is an evolutionary asset of its mission and copying an obligation of all its participants. It’s a different proposition than the average CSR.

What if everyone could follow every move you and I make? Big Brother would become blind instantly, and a lot of intellectual property would get lost. Would innovation still happen? Will you and I be able to find each other and get lost in a co-creative Babel? We don’t know, but it is time we find out, if we are taking the worldwide open experiment seriously. Share this!

Scarcity of resources http://opendesignnow.org/index.php/visual_index/scarcity-of-resources/ http://opendesignnow.org/index.php/visual_index/scarcity-of-resources/#comments Thu, 26 May 2011 11:36:49 +0000 remko http://opendesignnow.org/?p=340 Continue reading ]]> Fear of resource depletion is or will become the driving force behind a repair economy — to the extent that it does not already exist in most people’s lives. The use of raw materials just reshuffles them around the globe. In a few centuries, coltan mining will mean digging for ancient mobile phones in the rubble of former cities. Every openness emerges from physicality, and an average Google server plant consumes as much electricity as a city of 500,000. Who knows about ‘open mining’?

In contrast to the increasingly specialized machinery of industrial production at large, nowadays peer and open workshops equip themselves with ‘self-replicating’ 3D printers like RepRap and MakerBot. Do these machines have the potential to pose a challenge to industrial production? Will the peers pair that challenge and change the global production landscape as Gutenberg and the steam engine once did? Can digitization really affect the physical?
